"It's all I've ever wanted."
Persephone

Issue 36 of The Wicked + The Divine was released on 16 May 2018. It is the third part of Mothering Invention.

Solicitation[]

One day we’ll reveal a happy secret, like a Secret Santa, but not today.

Plot[]

The issue opens with a flashback to Ancient Egypt, 3862 BC. Persephone has just completed her transition to godhood. As she opens her mouth to sing, Ananke clicks her fingers and transports her head to be used as part of her ritual. We then see the same sequence of events play out through every Recurrence up to the present day, though sometimes Persephone kills Ananke, sometimes Ananke doesn't kill Persephone, and sometimes the death is mutual.

Monster, 9 March 2015[]

Baal recounts to Persephone the story of how he came to start killing children. When he first ascended to godhood, Ananke told him that he would have to sacrifice children periodically to drive back the Great Darkness. He initially refused to go along with it, but changed his mind when the Great Darkness killed his father. He hid his identity and used the necklace Woden made him to filter his powers to "something more socially acceptable". As he imprisons Persephone in a cage of fire, she reveals she is pregnant and that she doesn't know who the father is. He releases her and then burns down Valhalla. Persephone watches from a distance and finds a message on her phone from an unknown number, asking if what Cassandra said was true. The issue ends on a title card that reads "The Confession of Valentine Campbell, 9 March 2015".
